# Families of Hohki
## Overview and Origins
The Hohki[^hohki] and MacDiarmid[^macdiarmid] koichizoku[^koichizoku][^koichizoku-origin] came to Nejiro as Terran Alliance Navy[^terran-alliance-navy] settlers, providing fish and game to the military for their internal (local to the stellar system) and external (interstellar fleets) logistical needs[^logistical-needs].
The families established their homes several hundred kilometers apart near the mouth of the Yoshino-gawa[^yoshino-gawa], with easy access to Subarashi Bei[^subarashi-bei], and with lands and riverfronts on both sides of the Yoshino-gawa.[^settlement-locations]
After the departure of the Terran Hegemony Military in the twenty sixth century, the families assumed leadership positions in the region. Together, they were significant contributors to the establishment and construction of the Navigli Waterways canal and natural waterway transport system of the Cypress Basin region. They are prominent contributors to the environmental[^environmental] and structural engineering[^structural-engineering] of the area for flood mitigation and flood management.
They have also constructed a few bridges and tunnels across the Yoshino-gawa and its delta waterways and floodplains at various points. Notable crossings include:
- Nagai Hashi[^nagai-hashi], a one hundred sixty kilometer railway suspension bridge carrying two high speed rail lines, crossing the Yoshino-gawa and its surrounding floodplains from Mandarin Valley.
- Tollan[^tollan], a fifty five kilometer road and rail tunnel underneath the Yoshino-gawa that then links to the Michi[^michi] elevated roadway and railway; it crosses the wetlands and coastal areas of Subarashi Bei and eventually ends at the Spaceport.
- Koka[^koka], a thirty kilometer double wide elevated viaduct bridge with railway and roadway access designed to handle seismic activity and flooding.
- Ukikashi[^ukikashi], a five kilometer pedestrian bridge built on pontoons across the Iris River.
- The Skyway elevated highway bridge, spanning one hundred fifty five kilometers across the Cypress Basin, with a few local exits to agricultural and tourist areas.
Both koichizoku make their principle income as fishers and boat builders, and over the centuries have expanded their interests into a variety of interests including engineering and construction, mercantiles, news, defence, logistics, real estate, education, textiles, manufacturing, hospitality, and tourism\*. The two koichizoku are folksy, cordial, and amiable neighbors. They are both prominent participants in the city of Bridges administrative and civil services and in the Bridges Advisory Council along with the Saganami Dai Ichizoku.
